I had a conversation recently with a group of incredible women in business, and we started talking about something most of us rarely pause to think about → What actually drives you in business?
It was fascinating to hear the different answers that came up.
For one woman, it was money.
She talked about how more income would allow her to travel, enjoy new experiences, and give her family the lifestyle she’s always dreamed of.
For another, it was impact.
Her fulfilment comes from helping others and knowing her work makes a difference in people’s lives.
And for me?
Well, this will come as no surprise to those who know me, it’s the lifestyle.
I’m not driven by hitting six figure months or chasing big, shiny milestones.
What drives me is knowing my business gives me the freedom to live my version of success.
It’s things like:
✨ Taking my kids to school every day and being there to pick them up
✨ Working school hours so I can be present when they get home
✨ Taking a random Tuesday off to spend time with my husband Lee, who works shifts
✨ Having a spontaneous sister day when she’s free
✨ Visiting my elderly Nan whenever I want, without having to ask anyone for time off
That’s my version of wealth.
That’s what success looks like to me.
It’s not about how much I earn, it’s about how I feel living the life my business makes possible.
The conversation reminded me that there’s no “right” reason to be in business.
We’re all motivated by different things and that’s the beauty of it.
Some people are driven by financial freedom.
Others by creativity, service or legacy.
Some want to prove to themselves that they can.
Others simply want to do work they love without compromising the people and priorities that matter most.
Your drive doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
In fact, it shouldn’t.
The problem is, we often get caught up comparing our motivations and goals to others.
We see people celebrating income milestones and think we “should” want that too.
Or we hear entrepreneurs talking about scaling, hiring teams, or building empires and feel like we’re behind.
But the truth?
Success means nothing if it’s not aligned with what drives you.
When you’re clear on what drives you, everything in your business becomes easier to align:
Knowing your driver acts like your North Star.
It gives you direction, clarity, and purpose so you can build your business intentionally, not reactively.
If you’re reading this thinking, “I’m not even sure what drives me anymore”, you’re not alone.
Life and business can get noisy, and it’s easy to lose touch with our original why.
Here are a few reflection prompts to help you reconnect:
Once you know what drives you, the magic happens when you start designing your business around it.
Your business can (and should) be built to support your deepest motivators.
That’s where true alignment and lasting success comes from.
You don’t have to want what everyone else wants.
You don’t have to chase six figures to prove your worth.
You don’t have to sacrifice your peace to build something meaningful.
You just need to know what drives you.
When you do, you unlock the clarity and confidence to create a business that feels as good as it looks—a business that supports your life, not consumes it.
So, take a moment today to pause and ask yourself → What truly drives me in business right now?
And remember whatever your answer is, it’s perfect for you.
